Yesterday I met someone from the Internet. Mary found me online doing some kind of extensive, intense browsing (I'm sure, since I'm so buried in the recesses of the Internets) a couple weeks ago, and through our emails and texting we decided it was probably best for our health to meet. We spent most of our Sunday parading through DC in the scorching heat installing letters, love notes, artwork, photographs, stickers, and ideas along the U Street District.
I can't say that I have many other friends who would do this kind of thing with me! It was a lot of fun and very exciting, the prospect of getting our ideas out there and brightening someone's day with our words. One of the items that I left out there I'm going to count as one of my mail arts for this project, because that's essentially what it is. Even though I don't know who the recipient will end up being (and likely will NEVER know, though it's probably going to be the girl who was in the dressing room when I left the envelope on the bench in a vintage shop along U), it's still an envelope I decorated in earnest with inspirational sayings, magazine cutouts, and deco tape. It's full of random art bits-- things from other artists I had lying around without much personal use, as well as things I made.
I placed a blank label and two stamps on it, and a sticky note encouraging them to fill out their address and send it rather than opening it on the spot.
I like the idea. I think I'll send more out into the world.
