Welcome on board! I never realised that Groundhog day was actually a real day. What does it mean?

On groundhog day, we watch as a Pawxatanie (sp?) Phil comes out of his hole and look to see whether or not he sees his shadow. Legend has it, that tells us if we will have 6 more weeks of winter or not.
