Poet Thomas Gunn attempts to paint a portrait in words of the woman who appears in a photograph by his younger brother, photographer Ander Gunn. The poem, "Something Approaches" speaks about something approaching the woman " . . . about which she has heard a good deal." Later it says, "Let it come, it is the terror of full repose, and so no terror." Obviously, the poet is speaking of death, which may be a terror for some, but ' . . . no terror' for this woman who has obviously lived such a hard life, picking in the trash bins with her husband and children.
