So the Olympics have finished and I thought that everything about it was brilliant. I'm not a sports fan and I started very cynical but the Olympics was really wonderful.
However, there is one thing I'm still cynical about and it's the mascot. Wenlock, a one-eyed alien with no really recognisable features was clearly designed by a committee with the intention of not offending any section of society. Doesn't offend women? Check. Doesn't offend anyone of any colour? Check. Doesn't offend people with one leg shorter than the other? Check. It's so desperately conservative it's embarrassing.
I drew this piece to try to understand why they chose a sexless, featureless and frankly pointless creature was commissioned as the Olympic mascot as I find that drawing things has often helped me to understand what's going on in the artists mind.
It didn't help and I still find Wenlock totally unfathomable.

London 2012? I ended up a big big fan; watching different sports and listening to a whole range of people talk about their achievements and disappointments was captivating. But Wenlock and the logo... mmm... the only time I liked the mascot was when it bounded over when someone won a medal...
