#278 Lexicon Trashpo

When I first met my husband and we were writing letters and I was sending mailart (25 years ago), I got one letter with a word that confounded me.  He used 'chuffed' and I had no idea if that was positive or negative and that word was really significant.  De Villo Sloan has a wonderful, hilarious trashpo blog and it got me thinking about the language of trash and how we use such different English depending on where we live. One of my jobs in England was to americanize books and after you have lived with a husband and children who use those other words and you want to be understood by the people you live with, your language becomes so conovoluted. I found it difficult to be sure if words were American or English...

Hi, I just stumbled on this posting when I was Googling Trashpo for another reason.

Anyway, I am guilty of sinking into Americanisms that confound friends in other countries BUT "chuffed" was acquired from Cheryl Penn in South Africa. You seldom hear "chuffed" in NY.

Now carry on the holy work of Trashpo! Regards, DVS

Wow. You had to translate Emglish to English. That sounds like a great job!

Chuffed does seem to be a uniquely English word though

Thanks DVS and Andy - you are two of my biggest mailart encouragers! Some of the family leave today and most of the big family traditions that take up a lot of time are over again for the year (bittersweet) ... I hope to find a bit more time to listen and look for mailart inspiration here in Maine now. There is SO MUCH interesting language, trash and otherness.

Great to see you here by the way De Villo. You must drop by more often! Bet you didn't know there was another corner of the web where we were talking about you!

Rebecca can you put up a link to De Villo's trashpo blog please

Here is a link to De Villo Sloan's blog at IUOMA and his last TRASHPO Blog:

Hi Andy & Miss 'becca (as she is known at MinXus-Lynxus(she gets around))

This is a more linear conversation than at IUOMA.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery: Dark wall claims he is starting Mail-Art 100,000. You produce 1,000 pieces of mail-art per day for 12 years.

That will require a huge blog.
