132 - Flower of Istanbul (metro)

Labels:

While travelling on the tube in Istanbul we noticed in the walls at Sishane that they had these lovely glass mosaic flowers in amongst the mosaic walls. I really liked the way that the image of the flower was inlaid beneath the glass and how the petals came together to give a complete picture so I pulled out the watercolours and recreated the flower at home

This brings back memories of Istanbul. How interesting that we got to spend time in the same city, though at different times. I like this recreation of the flower.

We said the same thing when we were there, that it was sad that you couldn't be with us at the time. We had a great time and we know you would have loved the week we had, sitting around and making mailart. We miss you Mim!

Lovely. What does your mailart kit look like when you travel?

A very good question Rebecca. I always find mailart kits fascinating!

Personally I bring the Sharpies I think I will use, a load of scrap and blank postcards, fineliners, scissors (yes we've had 2 pairs confiscated at the airport. Silly us!) and tracing paper.

These all fit into a fat pencil case with a picture of Eeyore on it.

Do you have a travelling mailart kit Rebecca?

Ever since I went to Kenya 20+ years ago and had to take everything I'd need for 2 1/2 years in a backpackI have been a bit OCD about my 'kits'. I reckon my mail art or sketchbook kit is as important if not more important than all that other stuff, clothes etc. I refine it each time. I bought a journaling book that was pretty dull except it had all these great ideas for ways of making watercolour kits to take and it's made me even more obsessive about seeking out just the right boxes. We should photograph them for each other!

I thoroughly intend to blog my mailart kit, complete with pictures at some point. I'll keep you posted when I do, or given that you're in the UK, perhaps one day we can meet up and make art together and compare notes in person

Just came across this lovely 2011 flower - what a beauty! And also an interesting discussion about mailart kits - I have lots of little pencil cases, some tiny for eg just three sharpies.

Red, Black and Yellow perchance Stripygoose? I find my blue rarely gets used

Can't do without orange usually!

So fun to revisit this post. To remember Istanbul & to think about our traveling art kits.
