107 - Hidden horrors

Labels:

Our next door neighbours have a subscription to Amnesty and thus most of them get the Amnesty magazine every month. When they throw them out for recycling, I always pick them up. This month, they have a history of Amnesty posters and I liked the way that the images were gripping and immediate.

I wanted to make a piece in the same sort of style, trying to show human rights abuses hidden behind something, so I decided to draw a face behind a hand on red. It had something, by virtue of the redness, but I've got a long way to go if I want to do graphic design for Amnesty.

This envelope is going to The Royal Opera House for a competition. Gotta love the freepost love! The competition is to win a night at the ballet for two, followed by a slap up meal in a top London restaurant then a night in a 4 star London hotel. Wish us luck!

107 - Hidden horrors (back)

Back - This was an attempt at recreating the poster "Syria - state of emergency breaks the law" by Amnesty in the Netherlands from 1983. In the original the lines are barbed wire, but I was fascinated by the idea of doing scribbly lines like Kiera Pannell

Looks good, Andy. Good luck on winning those tickets.

Yeah it would be a real treat. We picked the competition entry form up the other night when we went to the ballet. It was SO cool, the Roayl Opera House are having a season at the moment, where they put up a HUGE screen in Trafalgar Square and screen ballet live from the Opera House to the open space. We watched it with the National Gallery behind us and Nelsons Column behind the screen. What a night!

That sound awesome, Andy. I attended a ballet recital Sunday. I now have a whole series of little sketches; inspired by the little ballerina's body language.

Yeah it was awesome. They're showing Cinderella soon in Trafalgar Square. We can't wait!

It's quite cool that the Royal Opera House is being daring and showing ballet in unusual places. We went to see a ballet last night in the O2 Arena. It didn't really work I must admit, but it's cool of them to try it out nonetheless, and it attracted a HUGE audience. 10,000 for a ballet?! Yeah it's true! Couldn't see a thing though...
