I had a nice realisation today that when you look up umbrella in the yellow pages in Sydney, most of the ads refer to shade. Down here a little less than half of umbrella use, I reckon, is for shade not rain.

I love it. When I moved to Washington state, I was laughed at(when I brought out an umbrella) by a native Washingtonian who told me that they don't use umbrellas. The wind blew my umbrella inside out and after that it was windbreakers and rain gear for the next 8 years. I could never figure out why they had the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle if no one used umbrellas, but I did rarely see anyone with umbrellas.
