My knowledge of cultural icons of any sort is quite limited. I had to use Google to figure out who Jonze is, and then it was the usual head palm ... "oh yeah! THAT Jonze!" This series makes me want to research all the subjects. The light in this one should have been my clue, but I just don't have the background to make it obvious. Your alphabet series could be my tutorial on who's who in filmaking.

And I'm looking forward each day to who will come next.

I'm with you PM - I have to look most of these up. Kiera is WAY cooler than me!

I still haven't the faintest idea what the lightbulb has to do with anything, but it's a great little artistic device.

What I want to know though Kiera, is how do you make those background colours so exciting? Whenever I go to colout in a background on white paper the white always shows through or the colour is a big flat block. What do you use for that effect?

Aw, man you guys, I am so not as cool as you are imagining. This is the part where I fess up and admit that I have a film production degree.

This in no way is the classical list of "who's who" in film - that's why I like doing it so much - it's my own personal list of favourites. For example, Anne Marie Flemming is not terribly well known (even in the film community) but she made one experimental short film called "You take care now" that is in many ways the kind of film that I wish I could make. John Greyson is another oddball entry - he's a Canadian experimental filmmaker/video artist who makes strange yet oddly compelling films that almost always have a queer bent. Who else would make a musical about the politics of the science of AIDS (Patient Zero) or a coming of age romance where all the characters are played by men (Lillies).

Most of the films/filmmakers on my list are Canadian or experimental or animation. It's a reflection of my own identity - a Canadian experimental animator. If you're ever curious about why I picked anyone, or who they are, please ask! I am never sure how much to tell people about a piece, so I tend to err on the side of not saying much of anything.

Andy - the red lamp is a motif that I took from an Ikea commercial that Spike Jonze directed. Also, as for the colours - normally I just use sharpies, but I'll colour two to three layers until I get the depth of colour that I want. In this image, I used permanent inks (the green backround), india ink markers, and a red sharpie. I sometimes get annoyed at the texture that shows up in my colours, because I generally want an even wash of vibrant colour, but that's difficult to achieve.
