#39 - Art of Cooking

Labels: , ,
Today I made stationery instead of a postcard. I wanted to do my own fold and send using a big piece of vintage cookbook I cut out a while back. I am not so great at getting stuff stuck on straight, so the letter part, to the left, has cockeyed embellishments.

For me, the handmade postcards and stationery are just a delivery system. It isn't that the handmade aspect isn't important, but I only make stationery so I can use it to connect with others. My postcards always carry a message, however mundane, and that is my art.

I wonder sometimes if the mailartists who get my postcards with mundane messages are puzzled. Most of the MailArt365 I've received doesn't have a message. It surprised me, and I asked Mim if I was "doing it wrong." She assured me that mailart is whatever I want it to be. Thank you, Mim.

This is what the piece looks like when folded ... this will be the back.

When I was in my 20s and 30s I didn't cook much. I was married to a man who only liked plain foods, and mostly meat and potatoes. I didn't eat meat, and hated cooking it. It wasn't until I was separated ten years ago that I learned the art of cooking. Now I'm with someone who loves variety and experimentation.

This will be the continuation of the letter. I don't know to whom this is going yet. I have about 30 odd pieces of incoming mail from last week that I need to sort. One of those penfriends will get this mailart for their response.

One of my goals for MailArt365 is to send to 365 different people. My weekly outgoing, including MailArt365, tends to be about 30 pieces, but that's only because I'm cutting back a bit. Last autumn I had weeks when I was sending 60 pieces of mail a week. About one third of that was Postcrossing postcards. I don't send more than one or two Postcrossing cards a week now because it got to be too expensive.

Thirty nine days into this project and I'm feeling like I've made it a habit. A very nice habit.

I really like the vintage feel of it! Fantastic! And every now & then I'd like to get to know someone on here well enough to actually exchange meaningful messages. I work so much, I really don't have any close friends where I live.

I always write something too. Most of my mail is sent to friends or family members, since pretty much all of them are far away.

I try to add a message, even if it's just warm wishes for a a smiley day. It IS nice to have some exchange, and get to know a bit of the character of someone. I love the fold-n-mail. I just keep getting inspired by seeing everyone's different things. I can't find tine to try everything!

It is a habit! And this week, I didn't make much new, and I feel an urgent need to cut things up and glue things together, and go postal!

I remember that cookbook era. I think the kitchens were all turquoise...
